Every year there are players who perform at a much higher level than they were ranked in the drafts. Everyone wants to be the owner who drafts that player. These sleepers can save a team, make a team and lead a team to the promise land. When it comes to sleepers or break out players, there are virtually no Running Backs one can mention. Everyone knows the RB's and their back-ups already. They are the most scrutinized and studied of any position simply because of how important they are to have and how few there are to go around. The only RB who comes to mind at this time is Carnell Williams, and quite frankly he very well might not be worth where he is ranking out at. His season will completely depend on how well Garcia plays. If Garcia has a good season, it will open holes for the Cadillac, but if Garcia does not play well then the Cadillac will look more like a clunker. However, there are a few quarterbacks and receivers who we at Kenjas Fantasy Sports feel are being ranked much higher than they deserve.
QUARTERBACKS
John Kitna – Kitna is ranking out at 72nd overall. Is Kitna in the league of Manning, Palmer or Brees? Not even close! But he is in Mike Martz offense and in 2006 he threw for 4208 yards and 21 TD’s. In 2007 the Lions have “supposedly” strengthened their offensive line and they have added Calvin Johnson as one more great target for Kitna. Put that with having a full season of learning Martz scheme and he should in the least duplicate last years numbers along with cutting down on his interceptions a bit. If Kitna is available in the 6th round, grab him up! Update - Kitna is now ranking out at 53rd overall which is approximately where he should belong.
Phillip Rivers – In his first season as a starter, Rivers threw for 3388 yards and 22 TD’s. Better yet, he only had 9 interceptions. With a full season behind him and being on a team with the likes of Tomlinson and Gates, I expect his numbers to rise. If he throws for 3600 yards and 25 TDs even, he is still better than the ranking of 91 overall. Update - Rivers is now ranking out at 76th overall.
WIDE RECEIVER
Reggie Williams – My hunch was crazy after all and I will be man enough to admit it. Williams was recently listed on the Jaguars depth chart as their 5th receiver. They don't seem to be happy with him and he might be on the way out.
Marty Booker – Even with Culpepper’s season ending early and Joey having to take over at QB, Booker improved as a receiver. The 2nd half of 2006 was much better than the first half and this could be a sign of him growing as a receiver. With Trent Green at the helm in 2007, you can expect his numbers to improve. 800 yards and 8 TD’s is not far fetched and that is great for his 152nd overall ranking.
Santonio Holmes – Not including Kenjas Fantasy Sports ranking, Holmes is averaging out at 101st overall. In 2006 he had 824 yards and 2 TD’s. Yet in 3 of the last 4 games (after becoming a starter), he caught at least 4 catches and at least 81 yards. In week 17 he had 4 catches for 124 yards and a TD. If he carries his starting numbers over to 2007, he will be a steal at the 97th pick over all and worthy to be taken a few rounds earlier.
Mike Furrey – This is a situation I don’t quite understand. In other experts rankings, Furrey is ranked anywhere from 98th overall to 156th overall. In 2006 he had 98 receptions for 1086 yards and 6 TD’s. In week 16 he had 10 catches for 107 yards and a TD. In week 17 he had 11 catches for 102 yards and a TD. So, why is he commonly ranked over 100? Because most experts are afraid he will lose too many catches to rookie Calvin Johnson! This is a good theory but keep in mind that Johnson is still a rookie and very few rookies put up big numbers. At the same time Furrey has proven himself to Kitna and as the inside WR, he will have more mismatches. Will he duplicate last year’s numbers? Likely not but he could easily still have 800 yards and 6 TD’s. Update - Furrey is now ranking out at 107th overall.
